USING OUR PLATFORMS FOR CHANGE

A guided, 2-hour session for historically apolitical influencers ready to speak up about social justice wisely and effectively

FRIDAY, mARCH 20
9am—11am PT on Zoom
Recording Available

We’re a group of social media creators (50k—4million followers) who run relationship, mental health, and self-help businesses.

Our brands have historically veered less-political, but in the face of rising authoritarianism and state violence, we feel called to incorporate social justice messaging into our public work—but we hold fears, doubts, and concerns. If we’re going to share politicized messaging on our accounts, we want to make sure we’re doing it strategically, wisely, and with the greatest likelihood of impact. This session will help us do just that.

Using Our Platforms for Change is a 2-hour, guided strategy session where we’ll learn how to protect our followers’ trust while maximizing our impact to create real change.

In this session, we’ll:

Navigate the industry-specific risks of speaking up.

We’ll openly address the real fears creators face—shadow-banning, losing engagement, losing income, saying it “wrong”—and with guidance from PR expert Mory Fontanez, discuss how to mitigate risks to our brands and businesses while showing up in brave, high-impact ways.

Get a simple overview of this political moment—and our part in shaping it.

We’ll hear, from an expert in the field, a concise, simple overview of social movement strategy: how large-scale change gets made, which issues most urgently need amplification right now, and the organizations already doing frontline work.

Strategize on-brand content that’s authentic and impactful.

Through guided reflection and small-group breakouts, we’ll clarify what our unique audiences already trust about our voices; workshop socially conscious content that feels personal, real, and aligned; and explore ways we could collaborate to strengthen reach and impact.

Research out of Columbia and Harvard shows that when historically apolitical influencers speak out, we have three times as much impact on followers' beliefs and behaviors as those who have more politically-focused brands — thanks to the parasocial relationships we’ve built with our audiences based on trust and authenticity.

Their strategies center the leadership and vision of Black and Indigenous people and people of color, especially those who are women, queer, trans, nonbinary, disabled, immigrant, and/or religiously diverse.
